The Experience at the Eleven Hölkná Cabins

The two Hölkná cabins, named after the beautiful salmon river below which they’re perched, offer an incredibly unique private angling experience in the northeast expanses of Iceland. The cabins’ remote location and the small size of the operation make you feel as if you’ve found a secret river that no one’s touched—which is nearly true. The two cabins are outfitted with richly layered beds, bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, and an outdoor area with a wood-burning stove, grill, and firepit. The lodging and culinary experience is self-led, and the cabins are stocked with all cooking equipment for guests to utilize. Best suited for four anglers, though eight can be accommodated, the Hölkná experience includes a guide whose experience fishing the area is unparalleled. You’ll embark with him each morning in a 4×4 to head to the stretches that are fishing best, in search of highly sought-after Atlantic salmon that typically weigh in from 5–20 lbs. Because of the rugged terrain, guests are encouraged to come with a degree of physical fitness and confidence navigating the area by foot, though the experience is entirely customizable to accommodate varying levels of endurance.

What will my travel day look like?

Arrive at Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport (KEF), catch another flight to Thorshofn, then stop for your groceries before transferring to the Hölkná cabins. Our off-the-grid outpost is situated along the banks of the famed Hölkná River, where you can spend the rest of the afternoon with your guide wetting a line and getting acquainted with the fishery, the region, and the local techniques.

What will my fishing days look like?

You’ll spend your days exploring 22 fishable pools on 8 miles of water over the next few days. You’ll target North Atlantic salmon alongside your guide who will show you the proper techniques for each specific fishery, along with ensuring that you’re consistently throwing the right flies and line.
