A Rare Experience on Iceland's Untouched Water

The Fish
Target Species
Here’s a sense of when and where you’ll target the three primary species: Atlantic salmon, Arctic char, and sea-run browns, which are all native to Iceland.
Atlantic Salmon
Starting in July, Atlantic salmon enter the Fljótaá and Húseyjarkvísl, nickel bright and at their peak size and condition. Atlantic salmon average 4–6 lbs, with many over 10 and a few over 20. The season runs until September.
Arctic Char
Fish for Arctic char in their home water, the Fljótaá, in the summer and fall months. At times there are big schools, ideal for beginner casters. In the fall, the tundra turns red and orange, and ptarmigan flush. The char range from 10–20 inches.
Sea-Run Brown Trout
May is the ideal month for sea-run brown trout on the Húseyjarkvísl. These iconic trout feed in the ocean but spawn in freshwater, and average 3–4 lbs with some reaching 10 lbs.
Hölkná Cabins
If you want to battle the hardest fighting fish (pound for pound) in the world, head to the Hölkná Cabins in northeastern Iceland from July through September. Two remote cabins situated on the Hölkná River give anglers exclusive access to eight miles of pristine water, where Atlantic salmon run from the nearby ocean.
