Vibrant costumes, intoxicating musical beats, traditional dance, and endless amounts of fun fill the streets as this joyous Bahamian bash begins. Unlike any other festival in the world, Junkanoo is a true celebration of Bahamian culture. Documented in the Bahamas for over 200 years, it is celebrated on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve—and, one could argue, unofficially on many Saturdays throughout the year. The build-up to Junkanoo is intense. Locals put months of careful planning into their costumes, dance rehearsals, and music routines, culminating in a day of celebration filled with fervent joy as the whole country joins together to partake in the festivities.

All Aspects of the Arts
This celebration of the imagination fuses all aspects of the arts. Music is one of the key components at Junkanoo, as people dance through the streets to the infectious beats of drums, horns, cowbells, and whistles. The dances complement the music, as established dance groups boogie in tandem with people on the street. The costumes add to the festive atmosphere and fill the streets with a kaleidoscope of colors. Cardboard is typically used as the building material for these intricately designed costumes, which are then decked out in feathers, beads, and colorful paints, resulting in extraordinary works of art.
All Over the Islands
The primary location for the festival is held on the island of Nassau, but celebrations occur all over the islands, including on Harbour Island. As the event rolls down Bay Street about 100 yards from Bahama House, one of our favorite spots to listen to the festivities is on our very own 1800 deck. Grab a glass of our famous Goombay Smash and allow yourself to get lost in the beauty and excitement of the Junkanoo Festival.
