What are the ingredients that lead to consistent snowfall? In order to have strong winters year after year, a location needs to be able to count on three things:

Moisture needs to cool down and condense to create snow. Mountain ranges accomplish this by forcing air upwards to cool (a process known as orographic lift), creating cold conditions that don’t rely on other forces like weather fronts or atmospheric instability.
3. Freezing Temperatures
Snow can’t fall at temperatures warmer than 0°C (32°F). The most reliable way to get cold temperatures is through higher elevation.
With geographically optimal water sources, tall mountains, high elevations, and other unique features tailor-made for huge snow totals, the Tarentaise Valley is arguably the world’s most famous “snow trap.” It’s a place where all the perfect ingredients converge to deliver run after run of soft turns, fresh tracks, and smiling faces.

The Tarentaise Valley benefits from two primary moisture sources: the Gulf of Genoa to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Most of the region’s biggest storms come from the Northwest, and the Tarentaise Valley sits in a prime position to catch this moisture. As these moist Atlantic air masses hit the first high peaks of the Savoie region, they’re forced upward, cooling the moisture and dumping massive amounts of snow on the valley slopes.

The Tarentaise is what meteorologists call "inner-alpine." Because it’s a deep valley surrounded by high ridges, cold air often gets trapped on the valley floor. When a new warm front arrives, the warmer, moist air slides over the top of this trapped cold air, resulting in consistent snowfall at much lower elevations than might be expected elsewhere.

A huge portion of the Tarentaise Valley’s skiable terrain is above 2,000 meters (6,561 feet), meaning even wet and warm storms still produce quality snow at higher elevations, where the temperature remains well below freezing. This also helps build a massive snowpack that often lasts until May.

While most of the region’s snow comes from the west, a "Retour d'Est" (Return from the East) occurs when a low-pressure system sits over the Gulf of Genoa, pushing moisture back against the eastern border of the Tarentaise. When this happens, regions near Val d’Isère and Tignes are known to get up a meter of snow in a single day.
