Fishing Report: Taylor River Lodge
The rivers are flowing, and Taylor River Lodge is calling your name. Eleven Angling’s Colorado Fishing Manager, John Bocchino, shares a fishing report for Taylor River Lodge and why he is excited for this season.
“The fly fishing in and around Taylor River Lodge is really kicking in. Great water conditions make for exceptional drift boat fishing and the wade fishing on our private water and remote small streams is very good. The summer hatches are coming off every day. We are seeing green drakes, PMDs, caddis and stoneflies. The guides are rigging less nymph rigs and more dry fly and dry dropper rigs. Evenings are loaded with caddis. A few good rainstorms could keep this activity going well into the summer.
The learning curve. June fly fishing offers a lot of opportunities to learn from your guides. Whether it’s a tune up from a few years off, or if you are new to fly fishing, this time of year is perfect for learning the hatches and the insect’s life cycle. Your guide will show you the right flies to use for a particular stage of the hatch. You might nymph fish for an hour, then switch to an emerger and then cast to feeding trout on the surface with dry flies that imitate the adult bugs. Trout food and the ‘when and where’ is really fun stuff. Almost every spot and situation requires some casting modifications: upstream dead drift, to the bank with a reach cast and downstream slack line presentations. In one day, with our guides/teachers, you can cram in a years’ worth of info and you will catch a lot of trout in the process.”
Whether you are a seasoned pro or just starting your angling career, Taylor River Lodge can cater to your skill level. Keep an eye on current conditions and the river flows in Gunnison Valley here.
