Summary

At Taylor River Lodge, we’re surrounded by mountains, forests, and small creeks full of wild native trout. Fly fishing the smaller streams requires a unique approach, involving more specialized equipment and finely tuned skills. Imagine quietly working your way through the brush, positioning yourself just downstream of that perfect pool and riffle, and making a laser 15-foot cast with a single dry fly to a rising cutthroat. And then it’s fish on!

ANGLING OVERVIEW

This unique fishing trip can be booked for one or multiple days and is totally focused on fishing small creeks with specialized equipment to stalk native and wild trout. During this time of the season, we typically hike and wet wade, using 7- to 8-foot fly rods in the 3- and 4-weight class to throw single dry flies. It’s especially exciting to use our Thomas and Thomas premium fiberglass fly rods and our custom hand-made bamboo rods for this type of fishing.

These adventures are driven by access and creek levels and are usually best during June and July, especially in the high country. We can sometimes extend into late summer if conditions allow. We’re fortunate to have a variety of smaller water to fish in the area, including mountain streams, small creeks that feed into Taylor Reservoir, and an endless supply of beaver ponds. We also have private access to over two miles of wild trout water on Tomichi Creek (in partnership with Coldharbour Institute). This angling experience is for anglers who enjoy hiking and fishing and who are ready to get after it.

Taylor River Lodge

Blue sky, emerald green pine trees and granite cliffs frame all of your adventures at Taylor River Lodge. The property is a private, eight-cabin retreat open from late May through mid-October. The off-the-grid location deep in Colorado’s Taylor Canyon is the perfect setting for friends, families and corporate groups to unplug and reconnect. Fishing is at the heart of the experience, with a trout pond and a mile stretch of semi-private river steps from the cabins, and the Gunnison River minutes away for float trips. The surrounding mountains offer rugged single track and scenic hiking trails, and the on-site, rock climbing wall, archery and hatchet throwing area will make you nostalgic for your Scout days. After a day outdoors, steam and soak in the Bathhouse or cozy up in the main lodge with a good book. Evenings take on a campfire vibe with stargazing around the communal fire pit.
