The Lodge
About the property
It doesn’t get more off-the-grid than the Fljót Valley on the mountainous Troll Peninsula in northern Iceland. Deplar Farm, named one of 2023’s “Best Hotels in the World” on Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List, embodies an adventurous spirit fueled by deep connections to extraordinary landscapes. This remote area is a gateway for adventures ranging from skiing to sea kayaking and the perfect location for viewing the Aurora Borealis due to its notable lack of artificial light. Located on a converted 15th century sheep farm, Deplar Farm blends into the natural landscape with its black timber cladding and turf roof. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the property embrace the surrounding peaks and allow for an optimal perspective on the colorful skies dancing outside. Our winter season, from November through mid-March, may be short on sunlight, but days are still packed with adventures, like whale watching in the surrounding fjords, astro-touring the celestial events in our backyard with snowshoes, and fat biking or cross country skiing groomed trails around the valley.
Back at the lodge, guests spend the day hopping from our geothermal heated pools, saunas, and steam room to the cold plunge and enjoying locally curated treatments. And this time of year, our pool provides front-row seats to view the ghostly Northern Lights.
Deplar Farm is freestanding and intimate in size. The design encourages our guests to get out and explore the abundant, breathtaking landscapes that surround the lodge.

SLEEP
Decked out in sheepskin, Moroccan wools, and textured walls, Deplar Farm’s 13 bedrooms are a cozy contrast to the raw landscape outside. Grettir, the master bedroom, has a mezzanine loft with a spacious seating area. Our four gallery suites all have mezzanine-style lofts with hammocks and day beds for lounging or additional guests.
Hang Space
Nature is everywhere at Deplar Farm. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the surrounding peaks, while throughout the home, you’ll find natural touches, like driftwood from the nearby sea and stone from the Fljótaá River. The library features Icelandic books, and local art adorns the living areas. The spa is a standout, with a gray stone hot tub, sauna, steam room, and two Isopod flotation tanks. Guests can alternate between our Viking sauna and the cold plunge, or soak under the Northern Lights in our open-air geothermal-heated pool.
EAT & DRINK
The basic Icelandic diet hasn’t changed much since the Viking days. Arctic char, north Atlantic salmon, lamb, and skyr are still staples, but our chefs prepare them with modern techniques and a dash of international flavor. Neighboring farmers and fishermen make regular deliveries, so menus are always source-to-table. Expect blueberry-topped pancakes, locally caught fish, and pasture-raised lamb, as well as fine spirits, craft beers from local brewers, and wines from Deplar’s extensive cellar.
Wellness Amenities
Iceland’s remarkably fresh air and pure water set the standard for a truly sublime wellness experience. Along with a fully outfitted spa area, which covers nearly 5,000 square feet and features innovative therapies like Isopod flotation tanks, Deplar Farm features a fully equipped gym, yoga studio, and a geothermally heated indoor and outdoor pool and hot tub.
