ABOUT THE ROUTE
The circuit begins at Eleven’s chalets in Le Miroir, a small Savoyard village tucked high in the French Alps. First, you’ll trek through picturesque mountain scenery scattered with wildflowers to Refuge les Mollettes in France. On the second day, you’ll hike about eight hours total, past historic wartime remnants over the Col du Mont pass into Italy, where the famous 205-mile footrace Tor de Géants takes place. Your second evening will be spent at Rifugio Valgrisenche. The third and final day, you’ll go on your choice of adventure, like glacier hiking, rock climbing or canyoning before heading back to the chalets in Le Miroir, France.
ABOUT THE HUTS
Along our haute route, you’ll stay at Eleven’s two backcountry huts, Refuge les Mollettes on the French side, and Rifugio Valgrisenche on the Italian side. Historically sheep herders’ huts, the stone buildings date back to the early 1900’s and still maintain much of their original personality. They’ve been restored to include a rudimentary bathroom with a shower, bunk-style accommodations, a kitchen, and a candlelit dining area with sheepskin throws that invite you to step back in time for an immersive overnight experience in the Alps.
SAMPLE ITINERARY
The first and third day can be personalized to include your choice of adventures, from Via Cordata and hiking to rock climbing, fly fishing, and glacier hiking.
Day 1: Start with the Via Cordata and Bike To the First Hut
Depart from Chalet Hibou or Chalet Pelerin to hit the Via Cordata route above Le Miroir. Traverse the limestone face with the support of your guides, then drop down to e-bike into the French Alps to the Refuge les Mollettes. Enjoy a lunch with local ingredients, fine wine, and incredible views. Soak up the stunning landscapes as the sun sets, then enjoy a chef-prepared candlelit dinner before retiring to the bunkroom.
Day 2: Hike Over the Col du Mont to Italy
Wake up to a crackling fire, then fill up on a hearty breakfast. Embark on a full-day hike of about seven hours and 3,700 feet / 1,127 meters of elevation gain, where you’ll climb mountain passes, trek by alpine lakes, and make your way across the border over the historic Col du Mont into Italy. After a picnic lunch, descend into the Valgrisenche Valley, where the Rifugio Valgrisenche greets you with après al fresco. Relax with drinks while you enjoy another spectacular remote setting and an evening full of Italian food.
Day 3: Enjoy a Personalized Adventure Back to France
A mountain-style breakfast fuels you for your last day, which can be spent rock climbing or glacier hiking. Ease back into civilization with a delicious lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in Italy, then jump in our vehicles for a beautiful drive back to the chalets.
ABOUT THE CHALETS
The haute route begins and ends in Le Miroir, France, at either of Eleven’s neighboring chalets: the seven-bedroom Chalet Hibou or five-bedroom Chalet Pelerin. These Savoyard-styled chalets offer an all-encompassing lodging, dining, and outdoor experience in the heart of the Alps. Chef-prepared meals, spa offerings, and an extensive menu of guided adventures combine to deliver a uniquely private and fully personalized experience in this undiscovered corner of the French Alps.
