When you first arrive at Taylor River Lodge, it’s a good idea to take a breath, not only because this incredible part of the Colorado Rockies is truly beautiful but also because you’ll need to adjust to being at 8,600 feet above sea level. Drink plenty of water, and think higher. Just a short drive from the lodge you’ll climb to 10,000 feet, where the adventure begins. This is where you will explore some of the most beautiful high country in the state as you hike to high alpine lakes to chase wild trout and native cutthroat. Take a breath. Take a photo. It’s spectacular.

This high country trip can be booked for one or two days and is a great way to combine hiking and fishing. Peak summer (July and August) is the best time to explore the high country. Once the snow melts, it’s time to explore the small creeks, beaver ponds, and lakes and fish for wild brookies and native cutthroat. For the cutthroat lakes, we need to wait for the trout to finish their spawn, which at times can extend into mid-July. It’s an excellent time to hike in the high country, surrounded by our incredible mountains and valleys teeming with wildflowers…and trout.

Day 1: Welcome

• Afternoon arrival at Taylor River Lodge
• Welcome by Eleven staff and tour of the property
• Enjoy a drink and snack and settle into your accommodations
• Cocktails and chef-prepared dinner in the lodge

Day 2: Full-Day High Country Lake Adventure

• Chef-prepared breakfast
• Departure time for fishing is usually between 8 and 9 am, depending on required drive time
• Hike to high alpine lakes with lunch at the lake
• Happy hour back at the lodge

Blue sky, emerald green pine trees and granite cliffs frame all of your adventures at Taylor River Lodge. The property is a private, eight-cabin retreat open from late May through mid-October. The off-the-grid location deep in Colorado’s Taylor Canyon is the perfect setting for friends, families and corporate groups to unplug and reconnect. Fishing is at the heart of the experience, with a trout pond and a mile stretch of semi-private river steps from the cabins, and the Gunnison River minutes away for float trips. The surrounding mountains offer rugged single track and scenic hiking trails, and the on-site, rock climbing wall, archery and hatchet throwing area will make you nostalgic for your Scout days. After a day outdoors, steam and soak in the Bathhouse or cozy up in the main lodge with a good book. Evenings take on a campfire vibe with stargazing around the communal fire pit.
