A note on fishing in iceland

Program Director - North Atlantic Salmon Fund

Fishing in Iceland will test any angler’s skill, and you will almost always have the water to yourself. Conditions are usually crystal clear, so anglers are often able to sight fish, which makes the catch all the more exciting. Most fishing is done with floating lines and fairly light tackle, and nothing beats a big fish breaking the surface to take the fly. Pound for pound, the fish are strong and will put up a good fight, especially if the tackle is light. In Iceland, all fishing is catch-and-release. I find nothing more rewarding than releasing a beautiful fish, knowing it will go on to repopulate the river and ensure great fishing in the future. Various waters will test the guide’s and the angler’s knowledge in fly choice, presentation, and ability to read the water.
